Preface


This manual explains how to administer Oracle ConText Option and perform the necessary setup and maintenance to allow application developers to develop text-enabled applications.

Audience

This document is intended for the DBA or system administrator responsible for maintaining the Oracle ConText Option system.

It is also intended for the user who is responsible for setting up and maintaining the text stored in the database. This user could be a DBA or system administer. It could also be an application designer or developer.

Prerequisites

This document assumes that you have experience with the Oracle relational database management system, SQL, SQL*Plus, and PL/SQL. See the documentation provided with your hardware and software for additional information.

If you are unfamiliar with the Oracle RDBMS and related tools, read Chapter 1, "An Introduction to the Oracle Server", in the Oracle7 Server Concepts Manual. The chapter is a comprehensive introduction to the concepts and terminology used throughout Oracle documentation.

How This Manual Is Organized

The manual is divided into an introduction and five parts:

Introduction

This section introduces Oracle ConText Option and provides an overview of the features and process model for the product.

PART I CONTEXT OPTION ADMINISTRATION

This section provides a discussion of ConText Option concepts and provides instructions for managing ConText users, servers, and queues.

PART II TEXT SETUP AND MANAGEMENT

This section provides a discussion of text concepts, introduces the ConText data dictionary, and provides instructions for setting up and managing text so that users (application developers) can perform text queries.

PART III CONFIGURATION AND TUNING

This section provides tips and information for configuring ConText Option and tuning indexing and queries.

PART IV REFERENCE

This section provides instructions for the executables and utilities provided with ConText Option. It also lists the objects in the ConText data dictionary and the stored procedures/functions in the PL/SQL packages provided with ConText Option.

PART V APPENDICES

This section provides descriptions of the views provided with ConText Option. It also describes the tables that comprise a ConText index.

Document Conventions

This document uses the following conventions.

Type Conventions

Following are the type conventions:

italics

Italics type indicates a variable or emphasis. It also indicates the variable portion of a filename

UPPERCASE

Uppercase letters indicate Oracle commands, database objects, and environment variables (e.g. ORACLE_HOME).

Command Syntax

Commands appear in monospace type. Enter information precisely as it appears. Following are the syntax conventions for commands:

braces { } Braces indicate required items. .DEFINE { macro1 | macro2 } brackets [ ] Brackets indicate optional items. cvtcrt termname [outfile] ellipsis ... An ellipsis indicates an arbitrary number of similar items. CHKVAL fieldname value1 value2 ... valueN italics Italics type indicates a variable. Substitute a value for the variable. arg1 vertical line | A vertical line indicates a choice within braces or brackets. SIZE filesize [K|M]
